Santa Cruz, local town also known as the “Island’s Portal” (where the International airport of Madeira is located – being the main entry point of visitors to the island) is located in the southeast coast of the island.

Santa Cruz is a small, very friendly town where absolute tranquillity reigns. One can actually appreciate pure quality of life enjoying the cafés, restaurants, esplanades, and the promenade by the towns’ sea front, the Children Park, and beautiful gardens surrounding both the local town hall and the historic church amongst many other features.

One can also visit the town market where local farmers and fishermen sell their produce every day.

The municipality of Santa Cruz has around 30 thousand inhabitants and an approximated area of 96 Km2 (including the Desert islands) and is composed of five parishes:

 

Santa Cruz:

Municipal capital, offers several swimming facilities, aqua park (unique on the island), promenade, sea front and municipal gardens

Caniço:

Diversity of hotels, restaurants and pubs for those who enjoy night life and swimming facilities

Gaula:

Due to its privileged location, this parish offers a unique and exquisite view of the whole Eastern coast of the island

Camacha: Very famous for its handicraft, the wickerwork, its folklore (islands most famous folk group) and traditional restaurants
Santo da Serra:

Mostly known for its PGA Golf course (the biggest on the island), the Sunday fair where you can buy local produce and flowers, “Levada” and mountain walk paths
